LINDEN - The Western Boone girl's basketball team beat Crawfordsville on Tuesday, 56-49, in the first round of the sectional at North Montgomery.
Western Boone's Sarah Brewer had 21 points with six steals and Presley Roy scored 12 points and grabbed nine rebounds to lead the Stars, who are 3-0 against the Athenians this season.
"We're very fortunate to win," Western Boone coach Rich Schelsky said. "But like I told the girls at the end of the game in the locker room, at this time of year, we're not going worry about anything, in terms of how ugly or pretty it was. This time of year is all about surviving and advancing."
The Stars overcame a second quarter spurt by the Athenians in which Crawfordsville cut a 10-point Western Boone lead to four points at the break, trailing 24-20.
The Athenians scored five points from the free throw line on a 7-1 run in the second.
"The whole first half, it came down to the fact that is all they did was either shoot lay-ups or free-throws," Schelsky said. "We just fouled too much. We just played total undisciplined tonight in a lot of phases of the game. Not just defensively, but offensively."
Crawfordsville carried the momentum into the second half and took only their second lead of the game early in the fourth quarter.
Crawfordsville's Shelby Haggard stole a Western Boone inbounds pass with .08 seconds left in the third, dribbled once in the lane and scored.
Haggard scored again in the fourth - two free throws and then was fouled on a shot and converted the 3-point play to take a 45-43 lead with 6:03 left in the game.
Roy tied the game again with two shots from the free throw line and Western Boone's Jessica Walker, who scored six points from 3-point range, made a trey to regain the lead, 48-45.
"We played on our heels a lot tonight," Schelsky said. "We were playing not to lose and you could see that in our faces."
Western Boone will face North Montgomery in the sectional semi-final game on Friday at North Montgomery at 6:00 p.m.
Lebanon will play Danville in the second semi-final game at 7:30 p.m. and the winners play for the Sectional Championship Saturday night at North Montgomery at 7:30 p.m.
