Dover — In a match-up of one of the top offenses in Class 3A vs. one of the top defenses, it was the defense that won out.

Class 3A No. 3 Western Boone out-scored Danville 24-3 after halftime and held off the Warriors 24-9 in Sagamore Conference action.

“Danville is a heck of a football team,” Western Boone head coach Jed Richman said. “They play really hard; they are physical and fast. I wouldn’t say we were sloppy, they were just countering what we wanted to do. I couldn’t be more proud of our resiliency. Our leadership really showed tonight.”

The Warriors came in scoring 38.5 points a game, ninth best in the class.

On the other hand, Western Boone had allowed just 6.5 a game, sixth-best in the class.

The Stars held Danville to 256 yards of total offense.

“Our defense did a heck of a job,” Richman said. “They were all over the place. They played as one until and really worked their butts off. They never quit, they kept on coming.”

Danville head coach Russ Sumner said the Stars presented some different problems than the Warriors first two opponents – Plainfield and Crawfordsville.

“I think their scheme is difficult,” Sumner said. “They shut down a lot of things we do well. We went back to our bread and butter and got a few plays here and there, but they did a good job of adjusting and doing things we were struggling.”

The two teams nearly battled to a scoreless tie in the first half, but Danville got on the board first when Scott Amor capped a 16-play, 89-yard drive with a one-yard run with 38.8 seconds left.

Western Boone drove down the field to the Warriors’ 24, but B’ster Detty intercepted a pass at the four yardline to end the drive.

After Danville punted on its first drive of the second half, Western Boone went right to work. L.V. Bowden ran for 59 yards on the Stars’ first play of the half and three plays later C.J. McMann connected with Austin Burtner for a 25-yard touchdown.

After gaining just 126 yards in the first half, Western Boone gained 79 on the second half’s first series.
