Elon:  Western Alamance jumped out to a 2 – 0 halftime lead then fought off a devilish attack to defeat the visiting Graham Red Devils 5 – 1 in a non-conference battle and to improve their record to 2-0-0 while Graham fell to 1-1-0.

The score might indicate a comfortable margin of victory for the Warriors; however, it took three goals in final eight minutes to secure the game for Western as the Red Devils just ran slap out of gas.

Playing its first home game of the season, Western controlled tempo in the first half and opened up the scoring when Junior Hernandez found the back of the net at the 14 minute mark.  Off a Warriors corner kick, Jamie Nakhle took an errant shot and placed the ball perfectly to Hernandez standing in front of the Red Devils goal.  Hernandez took one touch and fired it past the keeper for Western’s first goal of the game.

During the contest, Hernandez as well as Ben Rankin created havoc for the Red Devil’s defense with several chances to score in both the first and second half.

After a Graham foul outside the box area, senior Sam Stafford placed a kick back post to put the Warriors up 2 – nil at the 24th minute.  Stafford’s ball sailed through the air, bounced a yard outside of the goal then curved in past the Red Devil’s keeper as several Warriors were rushing to finish off the free kick.  Although Stafford’s got the winning goal for Western, the game was not secure by any means.

In the second half, Graham picked up the pace of the game and was more of the aggressor for the next 30 minutes.  Off a rare defensive miscue, the Red Devils were able to pass by two defenders and score their lone goal of the game at the 70th minute.

Just two minutes later, with the Red Devil’s defense starting to weaken, Hernandez out muscled a Graham defender on the right side of goal, crossed the ball over to junior Robert Burns who came flying in front of the net for the Warriors 3rd goal of the game.

The score energized the nervous crowd and the team as senior Tyler Schomburg then fought off a defender deep in Graham’s third of the field.  As Schomburg is getting knocked off the ball, he made a quick left footed touch to Rankin who then finished off the pass with another goal at the 76th minute to put WA up 4-1.

With less than a minute to go in the game, Stafford was taken down inside the box area and was award a PK.  Stafford recorded his second goal of the game as he placed the penalty kick right of goal giving Western a 5 – 1 victory.

For the game, Western had 14 shots on goal to Graham’s 4.  Western’s keeper Tyler Billings recorded 5 saves to 9 for the Red Devils.  The Warriors won the corner kick battle at 3 to 1.  Fouls were called evenly at 13 a piece; however, Western received 1 yellow card to 2 for Graham.

Western will travel to Williams this Wednesday evening to take on the Bulldogs who are 1-1-0.  This will be the JV’s first game of the season starting at 5:30 PM with the varsity game to follow.  Please come out and support the team this Wednesday evening.  Western fans have been great in both outing so far, let’s keep it up.
