Warriors perform well at Wake Forest Soccer Camp
Story by Keith Thomas
This past weekend 17 potential soccer candidates attended Wake Forest University team camp to represent Western Alamance High School. The camp was a jump start for the boys who are preparing for tryouts this Friday morning at Western. This season the Warriors will be under the direction of new head coach Bruce Shepherd who has over 35 years of coaching in both club and high school with his most recent stint at the helm of the Graham Red Devils soccer program.
The camp provided the boys with training on individual and team skills as well as several tactical approaches to the game. WA also competed in several soccer matches and sported a 2–0–2 record during the weekend. One of the many highlights from the weekend was a team of 6 players from Western making the finals in a 5 v 5 barefoot soccer playoff championship. In the finals, the boys got the chance to tackle the incoming freshman to the Wake Forest soccer program. (I was unable to record the score of this game; the boys were sworn to secrecy) All in all, this was a great weekend for the boys and Coach Shepherd.
**Please remember tryouts start this Friday, August 1st beginning at 8:30 AM. If you do not have a current physical on file with the school, please bring one. Students will not be allowed to tryout until an up-to-date physical is on file.
