Behind goals from Jamie Nakhle and Josh Price, the Western Alamance men's soccer team earned its second victory over Southern Alamance this season, by a 2-1 margin Monday night on the Patriots field.
In a rematch from last week’s 2 – 1 win over Southern, the Warriors were relentless on offense out shooting Southern Alamance 9 to 0 in the first half and 15 to 3 for the game; however, Western had nothing to show for their strong first half effort. The Warriors also held a huge advantage in corner kicks at 10 – 0, but could not convert these opportunities into points.
Sporting New jerseys for a benefit game later in the season with Williams, Nakhle scored the first goal of the match off an assist from senior Blake Moyer in the 44th minute. Moyer, working deep in the Patriots side of the pitch, won the ball in the air and passed over to Nakhle who pasted a shot by the keeper from 15 yards out to put Western up 1 – 0.
Later in the half, Western would up the ante 2 – 0 when Price found a loose ball 20 yards away from the Patriot’s goal. With Southern unable to clear the ball from their end of the field, Price ran onto the ball in the 68th minute and sent a missile by the keeper to give the Warriors a much needed insurance goal.
The Patriots would not go away quietly and made the game interesting when Southern’s Evan Melton took a pass in Warriors territory and raced 25 yards scoring for the Patriots only goal. Southern would not threaten again during the final minutes of the game.
Western (7 – 2 – 1) will return home this Wednesday evening to face Eden Morehead for their first conference game of the season. Game time is at 6:00 PM as the Panthers do not field a JV team.
