Monday night, senior Camden Brooks scored the winning goal in the 67th minute to help Western Alamance secure a non-conference victory over visiting Southern Alamance. The Warriors improve their record to 6 – 2 – 0 overall while Southern fell to 2 – 3 – 0.
In the first half, after completely dominating possession and peppering the Southern keeper with several shots on goal, Western was unable to score until Jamie Nakhle received a pass off a corner kick from Sam Stafford in the 37th minute. Nakhle took the pass and immediately returned the ball to Stafford who fired a shot by a Southern defender and the keeper for the only goal of the half. With the strong advantage of ball possession, the Warriors placed 14 shots at goal while the defense held the Patriots to just 4 shots during the half.
Southern picked up the tempo in the second half and started to find some small openings for scoring chances. Finally, in the 65th minute after a questionable fall in the Western’s penalty area by a Patriots player, Southern was awarded a penalty kick. Zack Byrd stepped up and answered Western’s first half goal to draw the Patriots even at 1 apiece.
Brooks heroics came three minutes later when Stafford placed a corner kick to the back post of the Patriots goal. As the ball sailed over the entire field of players, Brooks slid behind the defense and played the ball off the bounce with a one-touch goal. Leading 2 – 1, Western would hold on to the victory as neither team could manage an additional goal.
Game summary showed the Warriors had 25 shots toward goal while Southern managed 12. Western’s keeper Tyler Billings stopped 4 shots as the Patriot’s goalie Davis Kappert saved 12. The Warriors were whistled for 11 fouls to 8 by Southern.
Western travels to Graham Wednesday evening to tackle the Red Devils in another non-conference county battle. Based on Eurosport Scoreboard, Graham is undefeated at 4 – 0 – 0. The Varsity game will begin at 6:00 PM as the Red Devils do not field a JV team.
