Warrior Baseball held its annual "end-of-year" banquet on Monday evening at Westside Fellowship. And, first of all, let me start of by thanking Westside Fellowship for graciously opening their doors for numerious Western Alamance events this season (and in years past).
JV & Varsity players, coaches, and families were on hand for a delicious spaghetti dinner followed by an awards ceremony. Although the Warriors are still very much alive in the State Playoffs and serveral end-of-season awards are still to be determined, Coach Huff emphasized that he wanted to hold the banquet at this time so that Warriors could focus their attention on the playoffs and their upcoming end-of-term studies.
First up was JV Coach, Mitch Carter. Coach Carter discussed the season and how the Warriors grew togehter after a somewhat rocky start to year. The JV Warriors finished strong winning the Spring/Easter Tournament and finishing 2nd overall in the conference statndings with a 17-5 record.
Coach Huff then took the stage and very proudly (and rightfully so) showed off some "State Championship" hardware. This championship was for the 2010-2011 season and is something in which Coach Huff, the team, and the entire school can take great pride in. This award was the "State Champioship Academic" trophy for the baseball team with the highest GPA in the entire state of NC last season!!
Coach Huff went on to discuss this season and the strong finish by the Warriors that was recently highlighted by winning the Mid-State 3A Conference Tournament Championship! This is only the 2nd time in the past 19 years thet WA has won the conference tournament championship.`
WA will lose 10 seniors this year to graduation. But there is still a lot of baseball to be played and the Warriors are hoping to make some noise in the state championship tournament. Play begins on Thursday evening at home vs. Orange County. First pitch is at 7:00pm.
