Western Lady Warriors Fall Short in Upset Bid at Morehead

February 11, 2012
By Jim Scruggs of Western Alamance High School

At Eden Morehead on Friday night Western played perhaps it’s best game of the season and led by 2, 41-49, with only 3:40 to play. Could this finally be THE night?

Up to that pivotal point in this game, Western had continued to show the steady improvement that has been evident over the past few weeks. The Lady Warriors were playing with poise and with a determined spirit. Alexis Dickerson somehow had been left unguarded in the Panthers’ 2-3 zone and the Western guards found her time and time again for short jumpers in the lane. When she missed, she rebounded her miss and scored. Kierra James was muscling inside for a steady stream of points. The defense was solid and the turnovers were being managed. Was this to be THE night?

The 3rd quarter acid test (usually when our Cinderella turns into a pumpkin) had been passed -- with flying colors! Western outscored Morehead 20-9 in the quarter. Could this be THE night -- Finally?

Alas, it was not to be. After Western took the 2 point lead with 3:40 remaining, the Panthers went on an 11-1 run to reclaim control of the game. In the end, the old demons resurfaced as Western committed a few too many crucial turnovers and left a few too many points at the foul line (6 for 15 on the night with some of these front ends of one and one’s) .

This was not the night.

One thing is for sure, the team has definitely improved over the course of the season. They will eventually learn how to close out games like this, just not this year. It was a good effort, a TEAM effort, they fell just a little short.

In defeat, James and Dickerson were superb, each finishing with 18 points. Myah Riddie finished with 7 points and showed flashes of true potential as a low post player. Erin Scruggs and Mary Gailey each contributed 5 points and Kiana Davis added 2 to round out the Warrior scoring.

Western will play a road game in their conference tournament next week, most likely against Williams. Pairings are TBA.
