Home » Volleyball NewsVolleyball State Tourney -- Then There Were TwoNovember 17, 2011 By Matt Malatesta of VYPE MAGAZINE - West HoustonIt's been over a decade since the city of Houston has won a state volleyball championship. Two teams from the area still hold the torch for H-Town -- the Foster Falcons of Class 4A and Cy Falls of Class 5A.
After upsetting Friendswood in the regional finals, Foster has an uphill battle tonight against the No. 1 team in the country. Lake Travis is 48-0 and has completely dominated their opponents. The won the Nike Pearland Tournament to kick off the season.
"We were really shocked to beat Friendswood in five game," senior Tiana Dockery said. "We just took it a game at a time and came out with the win. We know how good Lake Travis is, but we are going to five them our best shot. That's all we can do."
Dockery is headed to the University of Kansas after graduation and her teammate Erin Fairs is headed to South Florida.
In Class 5A, could history repeat itself? VYPE's Preseason No. 2 team the Cy Falls Eagles knocked off district-make Cy Woods to reach the state tourney. Falls is the last team to have won a state championship from Houston way back in 2000.
The athletic Eagles face McKinney Boyd Friday night in the semi-finals. Cy Falls is led by Chanel Clark Bibbs, who is headed to Georgia Tech next season and Colorado-commit Alexis Austin. Super soph Mimi Eugene has already committed to LSU.
"We can't run away from the fact that we have a lot of talent and the expectations were big for us this year," coach Kathy Stephenson said. "We want to finish this."
