The State of Houston Wresting...
"I came to Texas from Iowa in 2001. The sport has grown dramatically in that time in both quality and numbers. Houston has become one of the top three areas in the state (Dallas and El Paso) for talent and Texas in general is starting to compete in a high level at the national level with several national All Americans just this past year."
Michael Froehlich, Westside Coach
"Wrestling is growing in the Houston area. I am not sure that Houston wrestling is a top area in the nation but our kids are making noise at the state level. I believe that the national level is close. We have some great wrestlers in the Houston area and the level of competition is getting better each year. I have a few All-American wrestlers on my team and feel that the League City area is a hot bed for the sport." Eric Thompson, Clear Falls Coach
"I have been coaching wrestling in the area since 1985. The growth has been phenomenal, especially after the UIL adopted the sport in 1999. The state meet was good before then, but has really got better each year since 2001. Now with the new Class 5A/4A split, I see another great growth spurt for the sport."
Bill Dushane, Cinco Ranch Coach
"Wrestling in Texas continues to grow. Every year, more and more schools add wrestling both in UIL and private school. This year the UIL has divided wrestling into 5A and 4A. Hopefully this is a step in the right direction that will lead to even more schools adding wrestling. Houston has provided many state champions in the past, both boys and girls and with the addition of the class system, many will follow."
Mark Balser, Katy Coach "Houston has had some top notch programs the last couple of years, but this year we will be down year 'team-wise' as a city. There are some very good individuals though." Brian Palazzi, Clear Creek Coach
