Katy Seven Lakes High School held their annual Friday Night Showcase cross country this week. The meet featured 23 teams including several of the state’s top-ranked boys and girls teams.
Kingwood senior Sandie Raines won the girl’s crown. She paced the 5K course in 17:56.18. It was the second-fastest in state so far this season but still off her personal best of 17:43.60 from last season at McNeil. She had a significant lead over second-place finisher Brittany Innis from the Austin-area Cedar Park team who finished in 18:28.45. Kingwood’s Grace Howley took third with 19:10.00.
Kingwood girls led in the team competition with 35 points against a tough team from Katy. Both Seven Lakes and unranked Katy Taylor finished well ahead of Cinco Ranch who was ranked 8th in state in the pre-season. Rising star Xavier Jimenez of Brazoswood was the boy’s champion. Jimenez repeats after winning against top-ranked runners Ryan Teel and Levi Kessler of Friendswood last week at his home meet in Brazoswood. This week he ran even faster and is the first boy from the Houston area to break 16 minutes so far this season, finishing in 15:51.90 well ahead of Christopher Mulverhil from Cedar Park who was second with 16:13.10 and Kingwood’s Sergio Rodriguez who placed third with 16:18.06. Cedar Park, ranked 2nd in state in 4A, won the boy’s team title with 33 points. Kingwood, ranked 4th in state in 5A, edged out Seven Lakes for the second and third spot 86 to 87.
Kevin Dean (16:33.80) was Seven Lakes’ leader and came in sixth overall. Seven Lakes was unranked in preseason polls and defeated Cinco Ranch who was ranked 9th in state. Cinco Ranch was fourth in the team competition with frontrunner Jarrod Ballou (16:44.60) who was 11th overall.
