All the yardage is great but winning a district championship and riding his arm deep in the playoffs is what he really covets. Otaro Alaka, Cypress Falls, LB Otaro Alaka is the total package. Alaka has the grades, the size, the speed and the ability to be a high BCS recruit. Only a junior, Alaka will run the defense for coach Kirk Eaton in an explosive conference. Nate German, Cypress Woods, QB Nate German finally takes over the reins in Cypress Woods' high-powered offense. German can run and pass, and his leadership abilities will be challenged as things have changed in the Wildcat den. A coaching change is a new slate of offensive weapons will make for some growing pains. THE INTEL It matters not what team has what players returning, District 17-5A always comes down to an exciting finish as there have been several teams who have won the title over the last decade. Who will take the top spot in 2012? CyFalls has been a team recently that does plenty in the passing game. Of course, there is some rebuilding occurring at quarterback because a good one left the team for graduation. Once that is solidified, the Golden Eagles have more than a few playmakers. Receiver JacoreyWarrick is one of the nation’s best with the ball in his hands. He made the early pledge to Texas. On the edge, TemiAlaka should be a major target in the passing game as well. Running back BrycePeters was a 1,500-yard rusher a year ago. On the defensive side of the ball, Otaro Alaka will be a highly-coveted linebacker for 2014 while Jacobi Hunter will fill the holes up front. One of the top backs in the country is at CyRanch in KeithFord, and Oklahoma-commitment who ran for over 900 yards and 12 touchdowns in a season where the Mustangs fell short of postseason play. Quarterback CorbinMartin took over the team midway through the year and should be solid in 2012 as the full-time starter. Cy Woods may have the most complete team. The Wildcats should be solid offensively with quarterback NateGerman, a player who is poised for a huge season and has had a number of Division I colleges interested this past offseason. Last year he threw for over 700 yards, but look for that number to increase drastically for this season. While German is looking for a full season, the same could be said of running back TrentHolmes as well. Holmes had four touchdowns and 365 yards a year ago. “The team looked good this offseason. Everyone worked hard and I truly believe that we have the team to go all the way,” German said. Holmes echoed those same thoughts saying that “state” is the team’s goal. Defensively, DeoundreiDavis, a Texas-commitment, leads from the linebacker position while hot safety prospect AlfredPullom is the best in the secondary. Making the playoffs a year ago was nice, but LanghamCreek is looking to go deeper in the playoffs. It seems as though the pieces are in place for that to happen. It starts with the new Lobo passing king in ConnorFeist, who threw for over 2,500 yards, 24 touchdowns to only five interceptions. Feist has a number of targets to throw to, with CalebHobbs and DominiqueHarris as the primary guys. Linebackers JacobHolgvin, NicoCostanzo and JalenMorris are all solid. JeremyLand leads the secondary. After a 12-1 finish for CyFair, there will be plenty of rebuilding going on as over 40 players graduate off of this team. Cornerback RyanBradshaw is a returning veteran in the secondary. Lots of changes went down at CyCreek, many of which occurred on the Cougar coaching staff as coach GregMcCaig had a number of his staff members take head coaching or coordinator positions elsewhere. McCaig, who because of the situation did not have contact spring training, did say that the quarterback situation has more stability moving forward. DylanPugliese was the leading returning passer. 30 players (13 starters) are back for CyRidge that went .500 (5-5) last year. The Rams have a proven running back in RennieChilds, a speedy player being courted by Division I coaches. CyLakes is looking to have a better showing after a lone win a year ago. Wide receiver RobertSylvester is the team’s top returning playmaker. CySprings will start fresh after going winless last year. But 2012 is a new year and coach RichardCobia is now in the top spot. Running back Tre’veonJackson and athlete (primarily a safety) DilaRosemond are the top playmakers for the Panthers. JerseyVillage finished with a 4-6 record in 2011. Quarterback DevontreBarlow leads the offense while defensive back LaTravienGee is the defensive leader.
