March 5, 2013By Dave Spoelker of VYPE MAGAZINE - Greater Louisville
The Kentucky High School State Ice Hockey Tournament was held at Iceland Sports Arena this past weekend with the Oldham County Colonels emerging as State Champion for 2013!
A field of eight teams started single elimination tournament play Friday. Oldham County defeated St. Xavier, Trinity topped Eastern, Owensboro beat Hentry Clay and Lexinton Lafayette prevailed over Paul Dunbar. Saturday in semi-final action, Oldham County eliminated Lafayette and Trinity edged Owensboro, settting the stage for Sunday's final.
In the championship game, the Colonel's Caleb Perry scored early and OC maintained a 1-0 lead for most of the game. Trinity's Ryan Gustafson scored in the third period and it looked as if overtime was destined. However, with approximately 90 seconds remaining, Ben Lau scored for Oldham County providing the 2-1 winning margin and capping an undefeated season for Coach Tim Scott's Colonels.
Of note is the superb defensive play by Oldham County throughout the tournament. Goalee Kasper Urbanik allowed only one goal in three games. In the semi final game he had 14 saves and notched 18 saves in the championship game.
The Kentucky High School All State Team (as voted by the coaches at the conclusion of the regular season) included several VYPE school players. Congratulations to Tyler Case (Eastern), Zach Flynn (St. Xavier), Jack Wise (Trinity), and both Jack Nagy and Alexei Afanasyev of Oldham County.
