Boy's 6th & 7th Region Preview

February 24, 2013
By Dave Spoelker of VYPE MAGAZINE - Greater Louisville

Region 6: Tournament to be played at Valley High School

Schedule: Tuesday (2/26)  3:30pm Butler-Fern Creek; 5:00pm Moore-Fairdale: 6:30pm PRP-Doss; 8:15pm Bullitt East-Southern

Semi finals Wednesday (2/28) at 6pm and 8pm  Title game 3/2 at 7:00pm

Favorite:

In a Region loaded with strong teams, Bullitt East (28-4) appears to be the cream of the crop The Chargers had a rough week around Christmas where they lost 3 games in a span of seven days. Aside from that not so Merry Christmas, Bullitt East has been outstanding with no losses within the District or Region. The trio of Troutman (Player of the Year in Region 6), Willis and Young are hungry after being bounced from the Sweet 16 early last year by eventual champion Trinity. They are on a mission.

 In the hunt:

PRP (22-7) is always tough but fell to Bullitt East by 20 points in the King of the Bluegrass Tournament and (if they get past (19-10) Doss likely draws the Chargers in round two of the tournament. Moore (23-7) has played well at times but may not be deep enough for the long haul. They face a dangerous Fairdale (18-9) in a Tuesday afternoon, round one matchup. Either of these schools could win several other regions in the state. The Moore/Fairdale winner will meet the Butler/Fern Creek winner for a spot in the Region 6 title game.

 Could shock the world:

If Fairdale gets by Moore, watch out. Coach Longacre’s payers are well seasoned and have the firepower to win it.

Region 7:  Tournament to be played at Valley High School

February 25, 27 and March 2nd

Schedule: Monday (3:30pm) Ballard-Seneca; (5:00pm) Male-Manual; (6:30PM) Central-St. Xavier; (8:15pm) Trinity-Eastern.

Semi-finals are Wednesday at 6:00 & 8:00pm. Finals Saturday at 2:00pm.

 Co-favorites:

Ballard is 26-4 and has just one loss to Kentucky schools (by one point to Trinity in the finals of the LIT). Kelan Martin is a force inside and complimented well by fellow Bruins LaVonne Holland and 6th Region POY Quentin Snyder. Ballard wants to take back that 7th Region and State crown from Shelbyville Road.

Trinity (26-5) had been on a sweet 13 game win streak, but that came to an abrupt end on a recent trip across the Ohio River at Jeffersonville. That 17 point loss was by far the worst Shamrock showing of the year and prevented VYPE from making Trinity the clear cut Region 7 favorite. Seniors Daryl Hicks and James Quick are the key parts to the motor that must be ready to play in this absolutely loaded regional bracket.

 In the hunt:

Male (24-8) was a surprise District winner over St Xavier and should advance in a their first round matchup with Manual, Ballard is a solid favorite over Seneca and would be too tough a hurdle for Male to jump. In the lower half of  Region 7’s bracket on Monday night, St. Xavier will face Central. The two met in the first game of the season with Central winning in OT. That game will be a dandy, especially seeing  Keisler (St.X) and Chandler (Central) match-up. That winner comes back Wednesday night to likely face Trinity who is favored in their first round game against Eastern. St. X stunned the Shamrocks a few weeks ago and would love to do it again. Central’s first go round with Trinity on 2/9 resulted in a 21 point loss. The anticipated final then pits the Bruins and Shamrocks in a rematch of the LIT finals (won by Trinity 53-52).  If that game comes to fruition, many see it as the state championship game before the Sweet 16 even begins!
