Holiday Celebration at City Life Shawnee Benefits People Near and Far

December 19, 2012
By Betty Coffman of VYPE MAGAZINE - Greater Louisville

On Sunday, December 15th, Youth for Christ's City Life Shawnee hosted a Christmas Party for neighborhood youth in which the kids were given the opportunity to give back to others in need in exchange for gifts they can give to family members.

At the event, community members assembled meals for Kids Against Hunger, which will be sent to needy communities in Eastern Europe. Once the children completed their task, they were invited to select gifts from among donated items to wrap and take home. Each child selected three gifts, two for family members and one to keep for himself.

One little girl selected a clock for her mother and a mug that read "Best Grandma" for her grandmother, as well as a toy for herself.

City Life director Chad Rehnberg explains that the objective of this event—and the center—is to empower disadvantaged youth through action, assisting them without offering a “handout,” but providing a chance for them to give to others in exchange for their needs.

City Life Shawnee's webside describes it as “a relational, holistic, community based ministry that desires to see deep change in an urban neighborhood through the raising of indigenous leaders from the young people in that community.”

During the event, the Louisville chapter of Kids Against Hunger reached a milestone, assembling it's 500,000th meal.
