Louisville Trinity Climbs again to #7 in VYPE National Rankings

September 11, 2012
VYPE MAGAZINE - Greater Louisville

Four games featuring eight of the nation’s perennially prominent programs made a major impact on this week’s VYPE National High School Football Rankings.

John Curtis Christian (River Ridge, La.) played the part of national championship contender while dominating Plant (Tampa, Fla.), 33-3, in the All-State Sugar Bowl Prep Classic at the Mercedes Benz Superdome. Curtis’ veer offense gets a lot of attention nationwide, but the Patriots’ defense was the key, limiting Plant to 194 total yards including 45 yards rushing on 31 carries – an average of 1.45 yards per attempt. As a result, Curtis moves up from No. 8 to No. 5. Plant drops from No. 15 to No. 22.

Don Bosco’s (N.J.) season got off to a bad start, losing to Gilman (Md.), 13-6 at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium on Saturday, and ending the Ironmen’s 46-game win streak. The loss bumps Bosco from the Top 25, but don’t be surprised if the Ironmen win their way back into VYPE’s national rankings during the season. Gilman, another former Top 25 team that opened its season with back-to-back losses to nationally ranked Moeller (Cincinnati, Ohio) and Our Lady of Good Counsel (Olney, Md.) remains on the verge of another national ranking after upsetting Bosco.

The Southwest Showcase, an interstate doubleheader featuring prominent teams from the Dallas-Fort Worth, Texas area and Oklahoma, had a bearing on this week’s Top 25. Trinity (Euless, Texas) outlasted then-No. 10 ranked Union (Tulsa, Okla.), 21-18. The Trojans have now taken No. 4 Bellevue, Wash. to overtime before losing on the road and beaten the formerly No. 10 ranked Union to earn a return to the Top 25. Previously unranked DeSoto, Texas beat Jenks, Okla., 46-27, to bump its way into the Top 25. Coincidentally, Trinity and DeSoto play each other this week.

ADDITIONS & SUBTRACTIONS

This week’s new teams:

23. Trinity (Euless, Texas)

25. DeSoto, Texas

Teams falling out:

6. Washington (Miami, Fla.)

22. Don Bosco (Ramsey, N.J.)

THIS WEEK’S TOP 25 BATTLES

No. 6 Bishop Gorman (Las Vegas)

vs. No. 9 Bergen Catholic (Oradell, N.J.)

Gorman hosts Bergen in a battle of two of the nation’s top Catholic prep school programs. Both teams put up 50-plus points in last week’s wins. Gorman owns an impressive win, beating then nationally ranked Our Lady of Good Counsel (Olney, Md.) 27-22 on national television.

No. 23 Trinity (Euless, Texas) vs. No. 25 DeSoto, Texas

Keep an eye on Desoto, which has impressive wins over Martin (Arlington, Texas) and Jenks, Okla. If the Eagles can get by Trinity, and follow-up with a win over a tough Cedar Hill, Texas program next week, they could make a dramatic move up the national rankings.

VYPE EDITOR BUZZ

Keep An Eye on Miami Central

Central (Miami, Fla.) dropped out of the ranking following a 35-3 drubbing at the hands of No. 2 Grayson (Loganville, Ga.), but the Rockets have a chance to shoot back into the Top 25 with an upset over No. 1 Manatee (Bradenton, Fla.) Friday. Central was impressive in knocking former No. 5 Washington (Miami, Fla.) out of the rankings with a 37-26 upset.

Potential Rankings Rockers in Kentucky

No. 12 Moeller visits Louisville St. Xavier on Friday. St. X is a traditional 6A power in Kentucky and has the most Class 6A state titles after Trinity. St. X is a top-5 team in Kentucky (3-1 record) that doesn’t appear as powerful as years past, but remains a potential stumbling block for undefeated Moeller.

No. 7 Louisville Trinity hosts Cincinnati St. Xavier is a good matchup with some history as Cincy St. Xavier was the last team to defeat Trinity back in in 2010.
