Regional Baseball Winners Advance to State Tournament
June 6, 2012By George Nunnelley of VYPE MAGAZINE - Greater Louisville
Area teams Central Hardin, Pleasure Ridge Park, Saint Xavier and North Oldham came out on top of the 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th Region tournaments, respectively, and will head to the Kentucky National Insurance/KHSAA State Baseball Tournament, which will be held at Lexington's Whitaker Bank Ballpark.
In recap of how they got there, Central Hardin defeated Green County (8-4), Campbellsville (4-1) and LaRue County (4-2) in the 5th Region tournament, sending them back to Lexington and giving them the chance to defend last year's state title. They will play South Warren in the State Tournament's first round on Monday.
Pleasure Ridge Park seemed to have no trouble running through the 6th Region, allowing no runs in three games and defeating Central (12-0), DeSales (2-0) and Bullitt East (3-0). They will advance to play Newport Central Catholic in the State Tournament's first round on Tuesday.
Saint Xavier repeated as 7th Region champions, defeating Trinity (7-0), Kentucky Country Day (9-0) and Male (6-5) in a back and forth game that was split up between two days due to inclimate weather. They will return to Lexington to face Mercer County in the State Tournament's first round on Monday.
Lastly, underdog North Oldham became 8th Region champions by defeating Simon Kenton (6-4), Henry County (11-8) and South Oldham (6-3). They will play Henderson County in the State Tournament's first round on Tuesday.
Make it out to Lexington's Whitaker Bank Ballpark this week to cheer on these Louisville-area teams and enjoy the best baseball that the state has to offer.
