Home » Youth Basketball NewsVYPE Tourney Brings Out Area's BestFebruary 10, 2011 By Matt Malatesta of VYPE MAGAZINE - HoustonThe VYPE Hardwood Classic at Legends Sports Complex in The Woodlands was home to some of the area's top fifth grade basketball talent. Dozens of athletes participated from across the city in this round-robin format and Sports Authority provided all of the awards and prizes. The Scouting Report Houston Elite 11U - The Elite won both games in the VYPE event and is a balance team led by Sahvir Weeler running the point and dishing to Drake Dusek at the three-point arc. They are also blessed with a pair of big-men in Mustapa Muhammad and Trace Oldner that clear the boards and make buckets around the basket. The Texas Longhorns - The Longhorns are led by their big-three in Trevor Moore, Isiah Davis and Mikel Rose. All can run, break the press and aren't afraid of contact. They are good on the open floor and in space. Moore is a star in the making. The Running Rebels - Led by Quenton Grimes, Michael Woods, Michael Grady, Jake Lanier and Grant Gunnell as their starting five, this team's strength is their pressing ability. Playing nine deep, the Rebels can wear down teams in a tournament setting. Houston Elite 10U - This team is ahead of its time. They play with the 5th grade teams and even practice against their Elite 11 counterparts. They are very competitive at 5th grade, but should dominate at their age level. Rytes Warriors King - Another team that plays up at the 5th grade level. They have solid guard play but a short bench. As they continue to face tougher competition, they will get better. They are competitive at 5th grade, but are a year away. Cut the Nets - The CTN 5th grade group is taking their lumps early, but will get better as they get used to the select basketball pace. They have some nice pieces that are just starting to gel. ISTI - The All-Stars are led by Robert Horry's son, Camron, but need more pieces to compete at the 5th grade level. Ben Simmons is coaching this group up and works hard on the fundamentals with this group, which will reap benefits in years to come.
