The Episcopal Knights were prepared for an SPC Championship run. Veteran coach Wayne Jones loaded his team’s pre-conference schedule with some tough public school teams to challenge his Knights early.
Episcopal played the likes of Beaumont Ozen, Class 5A regional semi-finalists Westside and Bellaire, along with Class 4A power Terry High School. Throw in SPC mates Houston Christian, Kinkaid and St. John’s School in the regular season, and Episcopal was ready.
“I really wasn’t too surprised with our end result,” Jones said. “When I got here and started working with this group, I could see how talented they were. There was already a solid foundation. We played some really good teams early and got some confidence.”
It’s the first time Episcopal has won the SPC since 1996 and the Knights did it with some veteran leadership. Guard Ken Williams provide scoring from the backcourt, while Brandon Williams and Kendell Ramlal were a force down low. Jamal Williams and Kenyon Jones played significant roles as well.
“We were leadership by committee,” Jones said. “It was someone new every night. Someone always stepped up.”
