Teams we perhaps didn’t see coming - Chron.com

VYPE MAGAZINE - Houston

They were off the radar when the season started – at least in terms of preseason rankings and media attention. But each is currently sitting in first place in its respective district. They’re listed here in alphabetical order:

1. Brazosport - The Exporters did start the season ranked 25th by the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches, but one had to think there would be a drop off from last year’s 25-win team after graduating the top scorer in program history. D.J. Griggs is now at Long Island and Brazosport is 21-3 going into tonight’s game against Terry.

Guards Khory Ross and Jaleen Smith are among the top seniors in greater Houston according to Hicks’ player rankings and each is averaging more than 20 points per game.

Key wins – at Clear Brook (89-75), at Elsik (79-75), at Terry (55-41).

2. Episcopal - This is a team that many thought could be good, just not this good. The Knights have a talented roster with three seniors signed to Division I schools – Brandon Williams (UT-Arlington), Ken Williams (South Alabama) and Kendell Ramlel (SFA). But there was a new coach as Wayne Jones came over from Strake Jesuit.

Episcopal hasn’t missed a beat and is No. l in the state among large private schools. The Knights have also handled their own against public schools, with their lone loss to 5A No. 13 San Antonio Churchill.

Key wins – vs. Westside (63-55), vs. Dallas Kimball (57-44), vs. St. John’s (59-49)
