The 2012 volleyball season is in the books and the Greater Houston-area was in contention for an elusive state championship that just fell out of bounds for the 12th consecutive season.
The south side of Houston dominated the hardwood this year as Clear Lake represented Class 5A and the Class 4A Friendswood Mustangs came out Region III.
In Class 5A, it was a battle in the regionals between Cy-Fair and Clear Lake, and Clear Falls and Cypress Woods. District-mates Lake and Falls would advance and do battle in the regional finals as the Falcons prevailed in four games to punch their ticket to the state tournament. Coach Chandra Eager's bunch would fall to eventual state champs Coppell in the state semis.
The Friendswood Mustangs made it back to the state tournament after knocking off Magnolia and Barbers Hill in the regions, only to fall to Aledo in the state semis.
While Houston will say goodbye to Chloe Collins, Marissa Guzman, Jill Bergeson, Kylie Randall, Sarah Starsner and Ashley Smith, who have been headliners in Houston for the past three years, there are several up-and-coming players and programs that will be honing their games for a run in 2013.
Watch out for the likes of Clear Falls and Barbers Hill in Class 4A, while The Woodlands, Kingwood, Cy-Fair, Cypress Ranch and Pearland will be loaded again next season in Class 5A.
