Buddy Ward Tournament and Scholarship

Calvin Ward serves as Tournament Director for Mid America Youth Basketball (MAYB) for the  Houston territory.  MAYB typically will host twelve tournaments during the select basketball season in Houston (March - July).  One particular tournament that is near and dear to Calvin's heart is the annual Dave "Buddy" Ward III Memorial Classic.

Calvin's brother Dave “Buddy” Ward III passed away in November 2010 from Stage IV colon cancer at the age of 49.  The tournament is named after him – MAYB “Buddy” Ward III Memorial Classic.  It will be held on May 25-27 at Manvel HS.  The tournament will donate a $500 scholarship to a graduating high school senior in his memory. The senior does not have to participate in basketball or in athletics.  Buddy graduated from Prairie View A&M University with a degree in electrical engineering.

The 1^st recipient in 2011 was Jona Griffin from Van Vleck High School.  Jona is now attending Stephen F. Austin University on a track scholarship.
