Because of changes in NCAA and SEC rules, the state tournament for this summer will be in Round Rock. The 2014 tournament is expected to return to Bryan-College Station, but the tournament’s 15-year host at Texas A&M isn’t allowed under NCAA rules because of a possible recruiting advantage such tournaments could give a school’s athletic program. A&M has been a popular summer site for the tournament because of it’s vast intramural fields which allow all games to be played at a single site. In Round Rock and, when it returns to College Station, the board still is finalizing plans to host games at public parks. In 2014, the Bryan-College Station Convention & Visitors Bureau (BCSCVB) submitted a bid proposal to the 7-on-7 state board to host the tournament at Veteran’s Park. With two divisions dividing Class 5A & 4A and lower classes and private schools, 128 teams from across Texas earn qualifying berths at regional tournaments beginning in May. With many of the state’s top programs and players, the 7 on 7 tournament has become a highlight event of the summer and attracts an estimated 15,000 spectators over the three days.
