April 3 Duncanville announces basketball coach Danny Henderson leaving to become Boise State assistant. April 1 Duncanville basketball coach Danny Henderson is the top contender to be named the third assistant for Boise State basketball coach Leon Rice. Henderson has been at Duncanville for one season after leading Flower Mound Marcus to Class 5A state titles in 2011 and 2012 and the 2010 state tournament with current Oklahoma State stars Marcus Smart and Phil Forte. White Oak/Austin College grad Henderson, 50, led Peaster to 2A titles in 1999 and 2000. Henderson was honored at this year's state tournament for surpassing 700 career wins. He has been involved in several discussions for previous college assistant jobs and is considered a premier tactician, motivator and has strong relationships with his high school players which should result in being a strong recruiter. An announcement is expected as early as Thursday. San Jose State hired Boise State's top assistant Dave Wojcik to create an opening on Rice's staff. "It would be an awesome hire by Boise State," said Marcus athletic coordinator/football coach Bryan Erwin. "Danny is a class act, tireless worker, and a winner." Duncanville assistant Kenny Boren, who played at Marcus and is Henderson's top assistant at Marcus, is a leading contender to succeed Henderson at Duncanville. Plano boys basketball named Dean Christian of McKinney Boyd to replace Phil Parlin. Christian has been at Boyd since 2010 and was an assistant coach at SMU, Air Force and has coached overseas. Parlin took over at Plano from Tom Inman and was part of Plano's 2006 5A state champ. Plano struggled with only a single district victory the last two seasons. Parlin, a popular coach and highly respected teacher who has had children star at Plano, may stay at the school. March 30 Berkner's Kendal Yancy-Harris commits to Texas Richardson Berkner point guard Kendal Yancy-Harris commits to Texas. (Read March 22 report more detail.) March 27 Kimall SG Keith Frazier postpones announcing decision. Texas A&M may give late offer for McDonald All-American who was deciding between SMU and Texas Tech. March 2 Richardson Berkner G Kendal Yancy-Harris sets offical visit at Texas for March 28. Look for a commitment that day. See last week's report: March 22 Richardson Berkner guard Kendal Yancy-Harris, who led the Rams to the Class 5A state tournament in Austin, has been become of the focal point of University of Texas recruiting with the spring signing date looming in April. Texas is coming off a disastrous season which ended with a post-season loss to Houston in something called the College Basketball Invitational. Baylor and Missouri have made strong runs at Yancy-Harris as well. Yancy-Harris is expecting to be able to get out of an early signing with USC following the firing of ex-head coach Kevin O'Neill in early January. Multiple sources have reported of the release but the NCAA hasn't made an official statement. Yancy-Harris is a 6-4, very quick to the basket point guard. Texas, which focuses on highlighting its former players in the NBA, hasn't adjusted well to the One-And-Done Era. It remains to be seen if Texas PG Myck Kabongo will return for his junior season after missing most of the past season with an NCAA suspension. Yancy-Harris is considered an elite guard but likely not a One-And-Done prospect so his talent level would give Texas some time to build a team _ again. Texas also is in the mix for Kimball shooting guard Keith Frazier who has said he'll make an announcement Thursday, March 28. March 20 Talked to Mickey Mitchell at Julius Randle commitment announcement to Kentucky. A star Class of 2015 prospect, Mitchell said he doesn't plan to play football anymore. A nationally rated quarterback and guard, Mitchell said he'll practice with the Texas Titans through the summer but doesn't plan to play in games. Mitchell said his knee is feeling great after a major knee injury suffered during last October during football. Mitchell has gotten much stronger through rehabbing program -- he's up to 230 pounds from 205. Prestonwood football coach Chris Cunningham said Mitchell's older brother Mike has the Ohio State off-season workout program and is eager to report to Buckeyes after graduation. March 8 Austin Grandstaff transfers back to Rockwall: Austin Grandstaff has transferred back to Rockwall, according to his father Wes Grandstaff. Austin started the 2012-13 season at Rockwall but transferred during the holiday for a chance to join highly ranked Huntington (WV) Prep. But Austin became homesick and transferred to Plano West in his father's attenddance zone. Grandstaff was not immediately approved by the UIL district executive committee for eligibility under UIL transfer rules and returned to Rockwall. Feb. 16 Austin Grandstaff wasn't approved to play for Plano West in the Class 5A state playoffs, according to his father Wes Grandstaff. A top-rated sophomore point guard for the Class of '15, Grandstaff will play for West next season and is currently preparing for a heavy spring and summer AAU season with Team Texas. West plays Richardson in the first round at Plano East on Tuesday.
Feb. 14 Update Highly regarded Austin Grandstaff has transferred to Plano West but it's undetermined if he will become eligible as West heads into the Class 5A state playoffs next week. Wes Grandstaff, Austin’s father, told The Dallas Morning News on Thursday that everything must be approved by Saturday and said that it’s “unlikely.” One of the Class of 2015's top sophomore point guards, needs approval of a waiver from the District 10-5A executive committee that allows his residence to be in Plano. Matt Wixon of the dallasnews.com reported Grandstaff's parents are separated, but not divorced, and his father lives in the Plano West attendance zone and his mother lives in the Rockwall zone. Grandstaff started as soon as he transferred to Huntington Prep, which had lost a player in December after being the nation's top-ranked team. But West Grandstaff told dallasnews.com that Austin quickly got homesick and returned to Texas and enrolled at Plano West on Jan. 30. Plano West already has two of the Class of 2015's top prospects with 6-3 shooting guard Soso Jamabo and 6-6 forward DJ Hogg. Plano West has qualified for the 5A state playoffs. Rockwall stars Elijah Thomas, Austin Grandstaff transfer Sophomore Austin Grandstaff of Rockwall has transferred at mid-season to Huntington Prep in West Virginia, the top-ranked prep school in the nation. Grandstaff will play for Huntington when it's featured on ESPN at 3 p.m. (CST) Saturday in a live broadcast from the MLK Round Ball Classic in Virginia. Huntington features 6-8 senior Andrew Wiggins who is featured as Canada's LeBron James after transferring from Toronto. Top-ranked Class of 2015 prospect Elijah Thomas of Rockwall also transferred to Deion Sanders' Prime Prep Academy last month. Thomas played in Prime Prep's victory over Huntington last week. The 6-8 Thomas is considered one of the nation's top college prospects. He stood out among top prospects by scoring 18 points on 8-for-10 shooting with five rebounds in 12 minutes. Thomas has been compared to the NBA's Zach Randolph because of size, strength with light feet, a soft touch, and can drive off the dribble. Thomas joins a star-studded cast of players at Prime Prep including nationally recruited junior guard Emmanuel Mudiay and seniors Jordan Mickey (LSU) and Karvair Shepherd (TCU.) Starters at Rockwall since freshman, Grandstaff and Thomas have been considered two of Texas' top youth players with Austin's dad, Wes Grandstaff among North Texas' most prominent select team coaches. Austin Grandstaff already has offers from Arizona, Marquette, SMU, UMass, Oklahoma and Texas A&M. He also has received early recruiting attention from Alabama, Duke, Kansas, Syracuse, Boston College, Oklahoma State and Texas. Grandstaff had a strong first-half of the season at Rockwall. In his last two games, Grandstaff scored 62 points.
