Denton Guyer vs. Tyler John Tyler

4A Division I state semifinal

7:30 p.m., Friday at Midlothian’s MISD Stadium

Two dynamic dual-threat quarterbacks will likely have a heavy hand in which of these teams advances to the state final.

Guyer (12-2) features junior quarterback Jerrod Heard, a Texas commit, who added two touchdowns runs and three touchdown passes last week to his already prolific statistics that have now risen to more than 3,500 total yards and 41 touchdowns.

Guyer’s ground game is coming off an impressive performance against previously undefeated Birdville, amassing 426 yards on the ground on 41 carries. Running backs Richard Whitaker (1,076, 17 TDs) and D.J. Breedlove (936 yards, 13 TDs) give most defenses too many weapons to chase.

Ellis Jefferson leads Guyer receiver with 43 receptions for 666 yards and eight TDs.

The Wildcats are averaging 463.3 yards and 45.1 points per game.

John Tyler (13-1) has also lit up the scoreboard in the postseason, averaging 49.5 points in four playoff games. The Lions beat Frisco Centennial, 38-24, in last week’s regional final.

Quarterback Greg Ward was very effective against Centennial, completing 25-of-33 (75.5 percent) for 307 yards and two touchdowns. He also ran for 81 yards on 10 carries and a TD.

Senior receiver Fred Ross, an Oklahoma State commit, is on a tear of late, scoring at least one touchdown in eight straight games. A stiff Centennial secondary couldn’t slow down Ross, who had 13 catches for 172 yards and three TDs. He has 76 catches for 1,462 yards and 21 touchdowns in this year.
