Home » Football NewsDenton Ryan's Father & Son Edwards together at Florida StateAugust 3, 2012 By David McNabb of VYPE MAGAZINE - DFWDenton Ryan lost its star defensive end Mario Edwards Jr. signed as a highly regarded recruit for Florida State. Now his dad has followed suit in leaving his spot as a Denton Ryan assistant to become part of the Florida State football program. A former Florida State star, Mario Edwards Sr. joined his alma mater’s football staff July 1. The ESPN website for FSU “Nole Nation” did a story earlier this week on the arrival of Edwards Sr. and working a summer camp for Florida State coach Jimbo Fisher. Edwards Jr. has been working out this summer with his future Seminole teammates while Edwards Sr. filled a player development role previously held by another former FSU defensive back -- Terrell Buckley (took a coaching position at Akron this spring.) Here’s what the “Nole Nation” story reported in regards to NCAA rules regarding a family member working for a school. “This is something of a gray area according to NCAA rules, which officially forbid any direct or indirect financial aid given to players or their family members, including employment, according to article 13.2 of the NCAA's Division I football bylaws. Edwards' position with Florida State will pay him $70,000 per year, without benefits, in a contract that runs from July 1, 2012 through June 30, 2013, according to information provided by the school following an open records request.”
