Newman Smith baseball elevates assistant

Carrollton Newman Smith has promoted Ivan Cedillo as head baseball coach according to Newman Smith football coach/athletics coordinator Paul Ressa. Cedillo spent last season as an assistant under J.T. Blair, who left in June to become head coach at Class 4A Marble Falls in Central Texas.

Originally from Lewisville, Cedillo graduated from the University of North Texas. Newman Smith finished seventh last season in District 9-4A, which included two of the area's top teams _ Frisco Wakeland and Frisco Centennial.

Blair had been head coach at Newman Smith for 10 years and a Newman Smith under Fred Howard the previous four seasons. Under Blair since 2003, Newman Smith won seven district titles, five bi-district championships, three area titles and had a regional quarterfinal appearance competing in very difficult UIL Class 5A and 4A state playoff brackets.
