Atkinson has been at Keller for more than a decade but he coached in Denton while an offensive coordinator for Ryan's 2001 4A state champ under Joey Florence. Longtime Denton coach Randy Patzkowski, who led the Class 4A Broncos to the 2010 playoffs, announced his retirement following the 2011 season. Patzkowski has been credited with keep stablizing Denton's program while new schools at Ryan and Guyer have created transition and dropping enrollments in the school district. Atkinson became the head football coach at Keller High School in the spring of 2002. The Indians have been to the playoffs four times under Atkinson, including a bi-District Championship in 2003. Most recently the Indians were Bi-District Finalists in 2009. Keller also has been part of a rapidly growing ISD which has opened four other schools. Keller was 2-8 in 2011 competing in the same district with 5A state champ Southlake Carroll. Atkinson, a two-way standout at Granbury, was a defensive back at Northwest Missouri before transferring to Stephen F. Austin University and ending his playing career as a receiver.
