June 28, 2012
VYPE MAGAZINE - Dallas

The UIL's state volleyball tournament is moving to Garland. The UIL announced today that the Curtis Culwell Center will host the 2012 state championships, Nov. 15-17.

Texas State University's Strahan Coliseum had hosted the state tourney since 2000.

“The Culwell Center is a first-class venue and we believe it will serve as a tremendous host for the UIL Volleyball State Championships,” said UIL Director of Athletics Dr. Mark Cousins. “We look forward to working closely with Garland ISD in creating a great experience for the schools, fans and students involved in what we believe will be a very successful UIL state championship tournament.”

The Culwell Center, formerly known as the Garland ISD Special Events Center, was recently renamed in honor of Garland ISD Superintendent Dr. Curtis Culwell.

“We are extremely excited about the opportunity to host the UIL Volleyball State Championships at the Culwell Center,” Culwell said. “UIL championship events make memories that last a lifetime. Garland ISD and the North Texas area are privileged to host this premiere championship event.”
