DFW area golfers win state titles

Allen’s girls golf team won the 5A UIL state champions, outdistancing The Woodlands by 11 strokes. Defending champion Austin Westlake finished third.

Allen was led by sophomore Maddie Szeryk who carded a 4-under 66 in the first round. Szeryk finished the second round at 2-under 138, second in the individual standings behind Westlake’s Sierra Sims.

Allen teammates Vanessa Ha and Jordy LaBarbera tied for sixth shooting 5-over 145.

Highland Park ace wins 4A boys title

Scott Scheffler of Highland Park jumped to a lead in the first round and never looked back while winning the 4A individual title with a 4-under 140.

Scheffler was three strokes better than Lake Travis’ Klein Klotz. Granbury’s Travis Benson tied for third. Trophy Club Byron Nelson’s Major Monzingo placed fifth.

Scheffler’s rounds helped the Scots finished second in the 4A team standings behind defending champion Lake Travis.

Tough finish for Byron Nelson girls

Maty Monzingo of Trophy Club Byron Nelson faltered late in the second round to finish second to defending 4A girls individual champion Lindsey McCurdy of Buda Hays.

Woodrow Wilson’s Grace Choi placed third, two strokes better than Eji Kwon of Carrollton Newman Smith. Nelson’s Rainy Manor finished in a tie for fifth.

Nelson placed second in the 4A team standings, three strokes behind Montgomery.
