By David McNabb

Plano’s six-time state champion boys soccer coach Bob Weir -- considered a foundational pioneer of Texas high school soccer -- has announced his retirement according to the Plano Star Courier. In his 35th season, Weir has guided Plano to state titles in 1991, 1992, 1993, 1995, 2000 and 2009.

With two regular-season games remaining in District 8-5A, Weir told his team of his decision Tuesday evening following the Wildcats' 2-1 victory over Lewisville. Defending district champ Plano is in a three-way tie for first with Flower Mound Marcus and Allen.

“You know when it's that time," Weir told the Star Courier. "It had been a situation where the work and the stress of being outside in the weather and all the things that come with this, I just figured it's time that maybe somebody else comes in and works with these kids.”

The 60-year-old Weir was named the 2009 National Soccer Coach of the Year by the National Federation of State High School Associations. Weir won his 500th career game Jan. 27 in a non-district matchup against Richardson. Weir’s career record is now 507-163-97.
