English to coach Plano West baseball

July 19, 2011
VYPE MAGAZINE - 8-5A

By David McNabb

Plano West has selected Don English as its new baseball coach in what has turned out to be a position swap. English coached at Coppell the last nine years before he was replaced by former Plano West coach Kendall Clark last month.

English has history with Plano ISD athletics. He coached at Plano East for six seasons before arriving at Coppell. East had four 20-win seasons in that span. English, a leading member of the Texas High School Baseball Coaches Association, has also guided top programs at Highland Park and West Mesquite.

Coppell reached the state playoffs in eight of the last nine seasons under the 54-year-old English, but Coppell community members have expressed disappointment in Coppell’s highly ranked teams not having more post-season success. Coppell was 30-8-1 in 2011 and 211-106-1 under English with a 95-32 record in typically very competitive districts.

At Plano West, English inherits a program coming off a disappointing 10-19 season with a 3-11 district record but is just one year removed from making a 2010 state tournament appearance. The 47-year-old Clark established Plano West as one of the state premier programs in the last seven years. Plano West won 2008 Class 5A state title, was the 2010 state semifinalists and a regional semifinalists in 2007.
