Loyal readers of VYPE High School Sports Magazine will notice something different about our March covers.

The three versions of our Baseball & Softball Issue covers show some of the area’s top baseball players in a new artistic light. Kurt Nelson of Innovative Images has captured this month’s cover subjects – John Curtiss (Southlake Carroll), Billy McKinney (Plano West), Jovan Hernandez and Jake Thompson (Rockwall-Heath) – in a rare portrait form.

We’ve been bombarded with HD (high definition) and 3D technology on products ranging from televisions and movie screens to smart phones. Technology has also helped talented artists like Nelson take their craft to a new level.

Nelson’s portraits are sports art, created by a multi-state photographic process that results in heightening an image’s dramatic impact.

The process began with his posing and photographing the athletes in his Frisco studio. He then photographed a background appropriate to the subject matter and merged the two into some of the most unique photos to ever appear on a VYPE magazine cover.

Nelson, an award winning photographer and his wife, Tana, having been working their magic since 1992.

Our VYPE staff thinks the athletes we’ve chose are some of the most special players of the 2011 baseball season – and Nelson’s portrait skills have made our covers just as special.
