VYPE National High School Football Rankings: 9.5.12

October 17, 2012
By Tim Polzer of VYPE MAGAZINE - NATIONAL

Manatee’s 41-6 domination of a strong Miramar program helped the Hurricanes hold on to this week’s No. 1 spot despite an impressive performance by No. 2 Grayson 35-3, over previously sixth-ranked Miami Central. Grayson’s defense, led by Clemson commit LB Robert Nkemdiche, put the clamps on Central’s offense featuring two D-I running back commits, allowing just 2 of total offense. Nkemdiche also scored two rushing touchdowns.

Grayson fans may argue that the Rams should vault over Manatee, considering the No. 1 team was tied with Miramar, 6-6, at halftime. Manatee’s explosiveness showed the team’s true potential by scoring 35 unanswered points in the second half.

ADDITIONS & SUBTRACTIONS

An upset in Texas’ latest high school football palace led to a former state champion dropping out, and a former state champ popping into this week’s rankings. Allen opened its new $59.6 million stadium by shutting out Carroll, 24-0. Allen is one of Texas’ perennial powers, but most expected this to be a rebuilding year for the Eagles.

This week’s new teams:

20. Allen, Texas

23. Cass Tech, (Detroit, Mich.)

24. Eden Prairie, Minn.

25. Camden County (Kingsland, Ga.)

Teams falling out:

5. Carroll (Southlake, Texas)

9. Central (Miami, Fla.)

24. Trinity (Euless, Texas)

25. Our Lady of Good Counsel (Olney, Md)

TEAMS ON THE VERGE

Central (Miami, Fla.) - Started with lopsided loss to No. 2 Grayson, but Central’s tough schedule will provide opportunities for redemption.

DeSoto, Texas – Hosting Jenks, Okla. after easily handling a tough Martin (Arlington, Texas) team in opener.

Highlands (Fort Thomas, Ky.) – Arguably second best team in Kentucky.

Trinity (Euless, Texas) - Trojans are 0-1, but lost at No. 6 Bellevue, Wash. OT. Can redeem themselves Saturday against No. 10 Union (Tulsa, Okla.)

Steele (Cibolo, Texas) – Beat Madison (San Antonio, Texas) 41-21.

VYPE EDITOR BUZZ

“Trinity (Louisville) hosts a very good Cincinnati Elder club this week which should give us an even better gauge of where this years team is. Trinity has been getting strong performances from USC commit DE Jason Hatcher, Vanderbilt commit DB Ryan White and undecided WR James Quick, who is considering Ohio State, Louisville and Cincinnati.

"Allen's shutout of defending 5A DI state champion Southlake Carroll was shocking. Allen's defense usually plays in the shadows of the Eagles' wide-open

offense, but keeping a Carroll offense that returned almost all of its skill players off the scoreboard is ridiculous."
