Home » Boys' Soccer NewsUnion Wildcats Soccer Set for District Championship GameNovember 1, 2011 By Noah Assareh of Union High School SoccerUnion Head Soccer Coach Matt Fennessey’s team knew going into Monday evening’s contest with the Pacific Indians that they would have to be ready to play if they wanted the chance to defend last season’s district title. Four Rivers Conference rivals Union and Pacific would go on to play in a thrilling game that featured all of the intensity, close calls, and clutch performances that make district games so exciting. The Wildcats would light up the scoreboard in the first half when forward Nick Schumaker would finish off a beautiful cross to give his team a 1-0 lead. Union’s consistent play and team effort would help them maintain the lead into halftime. In the second half, both squads came out with a lot of intensity. After the Indians just missed on a scoring opportunity, the Wildcats would seal the game on a great transition effort from forwards Emmett Parker and Nick Schumaker. After a great save on the initial breakaway, Parker was able to get an assist off of a pass to Schumaker who would finish a hard shot just outside of the goal for his second tally in the contest. The Union Wildcats will face #1 seeded St. Francis Borgia on Thursday evening in the Missouri Class 2 District 6 Championship at Borgia. Thursday’s matchup will be the second time Union faces Borgia this season. The Borgia Knights defeated Union 1-0 earlier this season. NOTES: This is the second straight season Union faces Borgia in a district championship showdown. Union defeated Borgia in last year’s Class 2 District 6 Championship by the score of 2-0.
