Union Wildcats Soccer Looks to Build on Momentum
October 10, 2011By Noah Assareh of Union High School Soccer
Although the Union Wildcats didn't quite get the kind of start to the season that they envisioned, the team has come a long way since the early stages of the season and continues to improve as the season progresses.
Union has made great strides in recent games against quality opponents such as Suburban West Conference member and 2010 Class 3 District Finalist Northwest and 2010 Class 2 District Finalist Borgia.
The Wildcats also began their quest of defending their Four Rivers Conference title by beating St. Clair 4-0 and Sullivan 3-0 to start off conference play. Union looks forward to an important contest at Pacific on Tuesday night in what is a key conference game that will likely have a big impact on what school will win the 2011 Four Rivers Conference championship for boys soccer.
In addition to the Pacific matchup, the Wildcats face local rival Washington High School on Monday night and then go on to host St. Clair on Thursday evening.
As for the JV team, the Wildcats have been hit hard with injuries to several players but are coming off a 3-0 victory over Sullivan High School. Freshman Brendan Schumaker made an instant impact in that game with two impressive goals. Schumaker had previously been sidelined since the first half of the first game of the season when he went down with an injury. Scoring the other goal in the Sullivan contest was freshman Emmett Parker. Also leaving a mark on the game was freshman Cory Lucas earning the shutout in his first start as the team’s goalkeeper. Like Schumaker, Lucas recently returned to the lineup after being out for much of the season with an injury of his own. The JV Wildcats look forward to facing a tough Blue Jays squad on Monday night in Washington.
