UPDATED: Union Wildcats Win District Championship

November 3, 2010
By Noah Assareh of Union High School Soccer

In a year that has had many high and low points, the Union Wildcats varsity boys soccer team proved that staying united and focused is what would keep them on a path to success. From a string of unlucky one goal defeats to the tragic loss of teammate Ethan Otte, the Wildcats stood strong together as a team and built a strong supportive bond that has made them a group that is extremely resilient.

Union Head Soccer Coach Matt Fennessey led a highly motivated and well prepared team onto the field at St. Francis Borgia Regional High School on Tuesday evening. The Wildcats dominated play for most of the game and dug deep when they had to most. After some tough scoring opportunities that failed to result in points on the board, Union found a way to score late in the first half. Brendan Schumaker snuck a nice shot past the Borgia goalkeeper to give the Wildcats a 1-0 lead going into halftime.

Borgia came out strong in the second half, but the Wildcats weathered the initial surge and would later tack on another goal. Captain Devin Arand ripped a beautiful shot into the right side of the goal from a moderate distance out to give the Wildcats a 2-0 lead. Things would get interesting when a Wildcat was called for a penalty inside Union's penalty area which resulted in a penalty kick for the Borgia Knights. However, Union goalkeeper Louis Berra made a spectacular save to keep the shutout intact. The Wildcats would go on to win their first Missouri Class 2 District Championship for boys soccer since 2001.

Congratulations to the Union Wildcats for a well-earned district championship. The Wildcats continue their postseason run soon in sectional play. Check back soon for related information.
