Home » Basketball NewsLady Vikes EliminatedMarch 6, 2011 Union Pines High SchoolBy F.W. Manning II The Pilot The Union Pines girls’ basketball team was eliminated in the eastern regional semifinals Friday in Fayetteville, falling 49-47 to Northern Nash in the fourth round of the NCHSAA 3A state playoffs. After trailing 34-22 at the half, Union Pines was behind 43-41 with under two minutes to go in the game with possession of the ball. However, the Vikings were unable to sink the potential game-tying bucket. The Vikes got another chance to tie the contest, trailing 47-45 with less than 27 seconds left to play the tilt, but a turnover led to a Northern Nash lay in that closed the door on Union Pines’ eastern regional title game bid. In her last game as a Viking, senior captain Tyesha McLean carried Union Pines in the first half. After scoring six points in the opening period, McLean had all 11 of the Vikes second quarter points. She would finish the night with a game high 30 points, as she went 7-for-13 from the field and 15-18 from the free throw line. Union Pines finishes its season at 27-4. It was the third two-point loss the Vikes incurred on the year.
