Union Pines knocked off top seeded Western Harnett to claim the girls championship of the Cape Fear Valley Conference in a Friday clash played at Western Harnett.
Sparked by double-doubles from Chrystal Hicks and Tyler Ross, the second seeded Vikings handed the Eagles its second conference loss of the season in claiming the title by a 63-51 score.
Union Pines Tyesha McLean, had 17 points and seven steals before fouling out with a little more than five minutes remaining. Tashi Whitney fouled out shortly after McLean with the Vikings leading51-38.
Hicks, who nailed important free throws down the stretch, finished with 17 points, 11 rebounds and five assists, while Ross, who shadowed Harnett star Ariel Burney in a box-and-1 over the final five minutes chalked up 10 points and 12 rebounds. Burney finished with 20 points.
The Vikings finished 12-2 in the regular season and 24-3 overall. Western Harnett went 11-1 in claiming the regular season title to earn the No. 1 seed entering the state playoffs.
Union Pines enters the state playoffs as a No. 2 seed and will play Monday at home in an opening state 3-A clash.
