UMS-Wright Boys Tennis Season in Review

The Bulldog Boys Tennis Team concluded their 2011 season by winning their third consecutive 4A State Championship held at Copeland-Cox Tennis Center in Mobile.  The team won all 9 titles and scored the maximum 84 points also for the third consecutive year.  In preparation for the state championships the Bulldogs played their most demanding schedule in school history.  The team traveled to Louisville, Kentucky and finished 12th in the National High School Championships during a frigid March weekend.  They also played traditional power Etowah of Atlanta and defending Florida state champion Washington of Pensacola. Included in the seasons final record were wins over traditional Old Shell road rivals Mcgill and St. Paul.

Senior Haas Byrd closed out a stellar career by winning his eighth and ninth state championships in capturing the Number 1 Singles title and teaming with Freshman  Dex Harvey to win the Number One Doubles title.  Sophomore Bronson Wessinger won the Number Two Singles title and teamed with Junior Manning Courtney to capture the Number Two Doubles title.  Harvey also captured the Number Three Singles title.  Courtney won the Number Four singles title.  Eighth Grader William Hooper, already a two time state champion, captured the Number Five Singles title and teamed with 7th Grader Nicholas Anez to win the Number 3 Doubles title.  Anez also won the Number 6 Singles Title.

Bronson Wessinger  was the winner of the coveted Stewart Carrington  Scholarship Award.
