RALEIGH - As the Cary volleyball players took the court before game three, a few had to wipe away a tear.

The first-round playoff match wasn’t over yet, but that sinking feeling had already set in.

Facing the state’s top-ranked team, Cary lost 3-0 to Leesville Road on Saturday.

Leesville cruised in its sweep, winning 25-19, 25-9, 25-10.

Cary led early in game two 5-3, but the Pride (23-0) caught fire, eventually rattling off 34 of the game’s final 45 points.

“They’re not an overpowering offense,” Cary coach Philip Goodloe said of Leesville. “They did everything, they’re scrappy, they’ve got a great defense, and they cover very well.”
