Fuquay-Varina volleyball topples Middle Creek

August 19, 2012
Tri-Nine Conference

FUQUAY-VARINA - The Fuquay-Varina volleyball team knew coming into the 2012 season there would be moments that would test their growth and maturity.

The Bengals, led by senior outside hitter Dana Lingenfelser, are a young team trying to build on last year’s playoff appearance, and hoping for a deeper run this season.

On Thursday, Fuquay-Varina’s resolve was tested early on in their first Tri-9 Conference match of the season against Middle Creek.

The Mustangs looked sharp and jumped out to a lead in the opening game, but following a timeout Bengals coach Jeff Pagel reminded his team to remain cool.

Fuquay heeded their coaches’ advice, coming from behind to take the opener 25-21 and then capturing the next two games 25-23 and 25-18.

“We just tried to hit the ball where they weren’t and keep them off balance,” said Lingenfelser, a three-year starter who finished with 11 kills. “We really were trying to move the ball around.”
