Gibbons joins Conference 2 heavyweights
March 1, 2012Tri-Nine Conference
Apex (19-2), Athens Drive (12-5), Middle Creek (14-5) and Holly Springs (10-6) were all playoff teams a year ago, giving Conference 2 - the assigned name to our area's boys lacrosse conference - the most of any in the state.
This year, Cardinal Gibbons (17-2) joins the league, a move necessitated by more Raleigh-area schools forming teams to fill Conference 3 and former Conference 2 member Triton, which folded its varsity team midway through last season, becoming an independent.
The arguably best conference in the state, which features all Tri-Nine boys lacrosse-playing schools, just got tougher.
Apex finished 19-2 in 2011, reaching the NCHSAA semifinals before losing to East Chapel Hill 12-7. Among the returning standouts are junior Luke Sieber (36 goals, 18 assists), junior Derek Sweet (Robert Morris commit who had 39 goals, 23 assists) and a pair of Queens University commitments, midfielder Taylor Barrs (29 goals) and defender Tyler Rogers.
