Junior center Zack Tobler scored 18 points and spohomore guard Nick Ruthsatz added 15 as the Colonels of Covington Catholic eliminated defending Sweet Sixteen champion Christian County from the consolation bracket of the 2012 Toyota Classic, moving CovCath into a Saturday morning matchup against Lafayette for 5th place.

CovCath held a 13-6 lead after one quarter after hitting six of 13 field goal attempts and holding Christian County to just 18% from the floor on three of seventeen.

In the second period, Tober equalled his four-point first period with four more markers, hitting two more field goals and ending the first half at four of four from the floor.  The 6-5 Tober’s five first half rebounds led CovCath and were equalled by the five of 6-4 sophomore Demarius Poindexter of Christian County.  CovCath led at the half, 25-16.

Tober continued his hot shooting in the third period, going two for three from the field, ending three periods as the game’s only double-figure point producer with 14 points on 6 for 7 from the field and two for two at the line.

Covington’s Colonels shot four for seven in the final period, finishing the game at 48% on 20 of 42 from the field while Christian County’s Colonels remained cold, hitting just three for 10, ending the game at 31% from the floor.

Christian County’s James White scored 10 of his team high 12 points in the second half to become his team’s only twin figure scorer.

CovCath and Lafayette will meet at 11:15AM on Saturday for fifth place in the 2012 Toyota Classic.
