New Academic Eligibility Requirements
December 14, 2012By Patrice Brown of Thomas Jefferson High School
Cheerleaders and Parents,
Recently the GPA data for all of our fall and winter sports teams was collected. Of the 11 programs included in the report, the Cheer Squad had the lowest team GPA at 2.41. Every Monday morning Mr. Skari and Ms. Allen provide me with an eligibility report. This report is currently based on CHSAA standards which require that all students with two or more F’s are deemed ineligible for the week. I have high expectations for our girls and I know that with the proper motivation and support they can achieve at a level equal to any other program in the school. Because of this I will be changing the eligibility requirement to cheer starting next semester.
Currently, as CHSAA states, athletes are eligible with one F. In my opinion failing even one class is unacceptable; therefore as of January 2013, having one F will make you ineligible for the week. I will allow a one week grace period, meaning, if a team member shows up with an F on Monday, they will have until the following Monday to bring it up before they become ineligible. If they have two F’s the policy remains the same and they are ineligible for the week. Academic achievement is our top priority. I hope that I can count on your support and encouragement to ensure that the TJ Cheer Squad is a successful program on the field/court and in the classroom.
If you have any questions, or you would like clarification of the new policy, please feel free to contact me.
