TJ Baseball Coaching Staff
November 14, 2012By Andrew Skari of Thomas Jefferson High School
The Program is led by Head Coach Robby Bales who enters his 2nd season as the Head Coach at Thomas Jefferson High School after piloting the Spartans to a 16-4 record and an 8-0 sweep of the Denver Public League in his first season. Prior to joining the TJ family, Coach Bales most recently coached Hitstreak Colorado to the 2010 Connie Mack state title in the team’s inaugural season. From 2006-2009, Bales was the Head Assistant Coach and Recruiting Coordinator at Colorado Northwestern C.C. where he molded two of the best recruiting classes in the school’s recent history.
Coach Bales is assisted by Al Bleser who brings three decades of professional baseball experience to TJ Baseball. Currently scouting for the Mariners since 2000, Al has aided the signing of two Regis University players, Craig Deaver and Peter Whatley. Al served as pitching coach at Regis University from 2006-09 helping the Rangers to three consecutive RMAC Conference tournament appearances. From 1993-99, Al served as a minor league coach and manager with the Rockies. His NWL Portland Rockies won the 1997 title with the help of current Major Leaguers Aaron Cook, Juan Pierre and Chone Figgins. From 1984-92, Al scouted for the Brewers, signing HitStreak staffer Jeff Knabenshue to a pro contract. As a player, Al played at Cherry Creek High School for coach Marc Johnson, then on to Lamar Community College, earning All-Region IX honors, before graduating from the University of Southern Colorado (CSU-Pueblo) in 1981. He led the RMAC in hitting in 1979 and was named to the All-RMAC Team twice during his time at USC. Following a tour at extended spring training with the Yankees, Al returned to teach in the Cherry Creek School District at Eaglecrest HS and is married to fellow Creek alum Robin, with daughter Alison.
