Grubnic Hopes to Make Reservations in Houston Winner’s Circle with Candlewood Suites Dragster
BAYTOWN, Texas (April 25, 2012) – Native Australian David Grubnic will take the controls of the Candlewood Suites Top Fuel dragster this weekend in Baytown, Texas, just a few miles from the Houston city limits, in hopes of finishing up some 14-year-old racing business. Grubnic, affectionately known as “Grubby”, and the rest of the stars of the NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series will be in 300+mph straight-line action at Royal Purple Raceway for the NHRA Spring Nationals.
Grubnic, who joined the nitro-fueled ranks of Kalitta Motorsports in 2004, was a runner-up finisher in his first NHRA Top Fuel final round appearance in Houston in 1998.
“We came very close to getting the trophy in Houston all those years ago,” Grubnic, a 49-year old resident of Bozeman, Mont., said. “Back then I was driving for another team (Montana Express) and we were making a pretty good lap against Cory Mac (McClenathan) in the final, but our car let go and subsequently ignited a fireball about 300 ft. before the finish line.
“It’s always exciting to get back on the race track with the Candlewood Suites dragster. Hopefully we can resolve some unfinished business this weekend with a win. Our partnership with Candlewood Suites keeps getting stronger, and we’re thrilled and honored to race for them in Houston and in the future.”
The Candlewood Suites logo will be prominently displayed on all four Kalitta Motorsports race cars throughout 2012, including major associate sponsorship on the Technicoat Top Fuel dragster driven by Doug Kalitta, the DHL Toyota Camry Funny Car driven by Jeff Arend, and the Tequila Patron Toyota Camry Funny Car driven by Rookie of the Year contender Alexis DeJoria.
Candlewood Suites’ primary sponsorship on the Grubnic-driven Top Fuel dragster also includes the NHRA Dollar General Summer Nationals, Topeka, Kan. – May 18-20, and the O’Reilly Auto Parts NHRA Nationals, Charlotte, N.C. – Sept. 14-16.
Grubnic, an 18-year Top Fuel veteran, earned his first career Top Fuel victory in Topeka, Kan. in 2005, becoming the first racer born outside North America to win an NHRA Top Fuel event. He has two wins in his career with 15 final-round appearances. Grubnic’s Candlewood Suites Top Fueler is helmed by drag racing icon and team owner Connie “the Bounty Hunter” Kalitta who serves as crew chief.
