Apaches Fall To Lewis Cass

March 3, 2012
By Gary Andrews of Three Rivers Conference

Wabash was out to avenge a Feb. 11the loss to Cass and the way it started Friday at the Manchester sectional looked like a possiblility, but a poor second quarter cost the Apaches in a 71-54 loss.

Travis Shears would score the first three Apache points and after a Breyton Nealis bucket Wabash led 5-2. Shears would stay hot, hitting two more buckets and wabash was up 9-6. At 9-8 Tyler Brewer and Nealis would hit to make it 13-8 with 1:42 to go. Cass cut it to 13-12 before Brewer hit again with .23 left to make it 15-12. Cass would hit with .09 left and then steal the ball and score at the buzzer to give the Kings a 16-15 lead after one.

The blown lead late in the first quarter seemed to effect the Apaches in the second. With nearly five minutes gone by Wabash did not have a bucket in the quarter and were down 22-17 with 3:17 to go. Tyler Brewer finally broke the ice to draw the Apaches to 22-19. With 2:37 to go, Brewer hit again to make it 25-21 when what would be the deciding run doomed the Apaches. Cass would reel off 9 straight points to end the quarter and led 36-21 at the half.

The third quarter would start with free throws, one by Cass and two by Brewer before Shears hit with 6:07 to go, making it 37-25. Brewer hit two more free throws to make it 37-27 and the Apaches had some life. Cass would build the lead back to 13 points and hold it there until 1:19 to go, then hit a bucket and a free throw to lead 50-34 with a quarter to go.

The fourth quarter was down hill for the Apaches as Cass built the lead to 20 points and led 57-36 with 5:55 to go. Cass built the lead to 60-38. Tyler King would bang home two three pointers to make it 63-44 with 3:00 to play. Wabash would continue to play hard and not give in, but Cass held on for the 71-54 win.
