Defense Lifts Lady Apaches
January 11, 2012By Gary Andrews of Three Rivers Conference
Offense sells tickets, defense wins games. That couldn’t have been more true for the Wabash Lady Apaches Tuesday as the Wabash defense led by Katelyn Vogel guided the Apaches to a 54-36 win.
With the offense struggling, Vogel led the defensive charge, turning up the heat with 8 steals from relentless pressure. The Lady Apaches held Eastbrook to single digit scoring three of the four quarters.
The Wabash offense struggled the first quarter, scoring just 8 points, but allowing Eastbrook just 8.
The Wabash offense started to come to life a little in the second quarter, but the Vogel led defense took control. Wabash out scored Eastbrook 12-5 in the quarter and led 20-13 at the half.
Coming out of the locker room the Lady Apaches seemed to be a little more motivated, with the offense clicking and the defense dominating. The Cromer sisters, Kelsey and Claire, plus Kyleigh Hampton started to find their range while Vogel and Hampton dominated the boards. Wabash would out score Eastbrook 19-8, stretching the lead to 18 points and leading 39-21.
The two teams would play to a 15-15 tie in the fourth quarter as the Lady Apaches held on for a 54-36 win to move to 11-4 on the season.
