NEW HEADING 1
February 13, 2013By Spencer Goff of Thomas Nelson HS
On Thursday, March 8, Thomas Nelson will hold another blood drive for the American Red Cross. Our last blood drive, which was held in November, was very successful. If you are below the age of 16, you cannot donate. If you're 16, you may donate with a signed permission slip from a parent. If you are 17 or older, you may donate freely.
There are four types of blood donation:
1) WHOLE BLOOD- is the most common, in which a pint of blood is usually taken.
2) PLATELET APHERESIS- an apheresis machine collects the platelets and some plasma and returns the red cells and most of the plasma back to the donor.\
3) PLASMA APHERESIS- the blood is collected by a machine, which separates the plasma, red cells and platelets and returns the red cells and/or platelets back to the donor.
4) DOUBLE RED BLOOD CELLS- an apheresis machine collects the red cells but returns most of the plasma and platelets to the donor.
In the days before you donate, be sure to eat healthy, drink plenty of water, and get plenty of sleep.
